Oki,
(“Hello” in our Blackfeet language)
“It’s a new day in Indian Country!” That’s a phrase I’ve heard for about the last decade and it seems to be getting louder. Whether it’s a faith statement or some person’s experience, there is definitely a “Jesus thing” stirring among the First Nations people.
My name is Jeff Yellow Owl and I am the District Supervisor for the recently formed First Nations District. In this first issue of our newsletter, you will be introduced to three of our Foursquare First Nations pastors and the bold move our Foursquare denomination has made to form this new district.
I was raised on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation (located in Browning, MT) and left when I was 19 years old, so I am well aware of the “reservation realities.” But I am also well aware of the healing power of Jesus Christ! I accepted Christ when I was 23 years old, and almost fifteen years later my heart continues to beat with the same passion that there are more Native Americans, like me, who need their eyes opened to Jesus’ love and acceptance.
Our American history is a sad one when it comes to the treatment of First Nations families, but the decision made by our denomination to be intentional about partnering with Native leadership, and participating with the Creator’s work among our Indian communities, is a radical faith move. I believe we are in the early season of experiencing a true revival in Indian Country!
Would you prayerfully consider how we might work together in this new partnership? I know I speak for our pastors when I say our desire is to see all the people groups receiving Jesus Christ. Our hearts are open wide to standing together with you!
